Transportation to Prince Edward Island

Wondering how to get to Prince Edward Island? Whether you decide to fly, drive, or sail to the Island, how you get here is an experience in itself.

By Air

There is nothing quite like flying over Prince Edward Island and seeing the breathtaking patchwork of farm fields from the sky. The Charlottetown Airport (YYG) is conveniently located in central Prince Edward Island and offers a variety of direct and connecting commercial flights. For a list of air carriers from the Charlottetown airport, visit FlyPEI.

By Bridge – Confederation Bridge

If you choose to drive to PEI, you can drive over the 13 kilometre Confederation Bridge which is the longest bridge over ice covered waters in the world and takes about 10 minutes to cross. It links New Brunswick to Bordon-Carleton, PEI.

By Ferry

Sail aboard Northumberland Ferries from Caribou, Nova Scotia and Wood Islands, Prince Edward Island. The 75-minute car ferry trip offers a pleasant break from driving. Ferries run from May to late December. Tolls are collected upon leaving PEI at Wood Islands. The ferry crossing takes about 75 minutes.

From early April to November, regular ferry service runs from Cap-aux-Meules, Îles-de-la-Madeleine, Quebec to Souris, Prince Edward Island. Visit CTMA for schedule, fees and more information.

The bridge and ferry tolls are paid only on departure.

By Bus or Shuttle

Maritime Bus offers daily bus service between Charlottetown, Summerside and Borden-Carleton and over 40 locations across the Maritimes.

A number of companies offer shuttle services by van to and from Charlottetown (and selected other Island locations) and Halifax. These companies operate from various locations and on different schedules; contact each for details about their specific services.

Transit PEI

The Province of Prince Edward Island is committed to developing a province-wide integrated public transportation system. With transportation being one of the largest carbon emitters in the province, this initiative is key in reaching PEI’s goal of being the first net zero province in Canada by 2040.

Local and intercommunity transportation services will link workers to jobs, students to schools, shoppers to stores and Islanders to the essential services they need to enhance their quality of life.

As the Province of Prince Edward Island continues to improve and expand our Island-wide transit system we want to hear from Islanders. We are happy to answer any questions you may have, discuss any of your concerns and listen to any suggestions you have to improve our system. Please email [email protected].
