5 people escape weekend fire that destroyed home near Kensington, P.E.I.

An early morning fire that destroyed a home in Kensington, P.E.I., over the weekend is still under investigation, officials say.

The fire started early Sunday morning at a residence on Clermont Road. A Kensington fire official said the department responded at 4:30 a.m. and the home was already fully involved.

All five people inside the home were able to escape, including a man who jumped from the second storey and suffered burns, according to the official.

As a result of the fire, a Code Orange was declared at Summerside’s Prince County Hospital at 6:40 a.m. It ended shortly before 1 p.m.

A Code Orange is called when an external disaster or threat is likely to require additional hospital resources.

The fire official said the New London department was called for backup, but the fire was out by the time they arrived. Because of the damp ground and minimal wind, the flames did not spread to surrounding areas.

A representative for the provincial Fire Marshals Office went to the scene, but no cause has been determined yet. The province said more information will be available once that investigation is complete.
