The Cavendish area of Prince Edward Island can expect a larger than normal police presence this weekend during the Sommo Festival.

RCMP Cpl. Gavin Moore said impaired driving is always a concern around big events like music festivals. He suggests making plans in advance for a safe and sober ride home.

“It’s not practical to be able to check every single vehicle, but I [can] say that anybody leaving the concert should expect it and be prepared to go through a checkpoint,” he said.

Besides the checkpoints, Moore said officers will be on foot patrol outside the grounds.

Moore said the increased police presence in Cavendish will not affect RCMP service in other parts of the province.

The music, food and drink festival is in its second year of operation, and runs Friday and Saturday.

Sommo’s headliners are the band Greta Van Fleet, which won the 2019 Grammy for best rock album, and Noah Kahan, who was nominated for best new artist at the 2023 Grammys.

It also features culinary demonstrations.
